SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA CHINESE LAWYERS ASSOCIATION

2009 SCHOLARSHIP/FELLOWSHIP APPLICATION

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Friday, March 6, 2009

The Southern California Chinese Lawyers Association ("SCCLA") annually awards seven to ten $1,000 Scholarships and three to four $2,000 Fellowships to local Asian/Pacific American law students.

The Scholarships are awarded based on need, academic accomplishments, and/or potential contribution to the Chinese-American community. Law students at all levels are encouraged to apply (including first, third year day, and fourth year evening).

The Fellowship award funds a clerkship at the Asian Pacific American Legal Center (“APALC”) during the upcoming Fall and Spring school year. Receipt of Fellowship funds is conditioned upon serving as a clerk at APALC for a minimum of 15 hours per week for 10 weeks. Please see the attached page for additional information on the Fellowship requirements and guidelines.

There is no clerkship condition for any of the Scholarships.

Completed applications are due on Friday, March 6, 2009. Applications must be postmarked by March 6, 2009 to be eligible. Applications will not be accepted by facsimile or by e-mail. Please forward completed applications to:

Shirley Yauw, Esq.
Asian Pacific American Legal Center
1145 Wilshire Blvd., 2nd Fl.
Los Angeles, CA 90017

The selected Scholarship recipients will be awarded at the annual SCCLA Installation Dinner on March 27, 2009 at Empress Pavilion Restaurant in Chinatown, Los Angeles. The selected Fellows will be recognized at the Dinner that same year, but will not be awarded the fellowship title or money until the completion of the fellowship requirements. The official award for fellows will be given at the following year’s banquet. Both the Scholarship recipients and the selected Fellows must attend the March 27, 2009 dinner to receive their awards/selections.

Should you have any questions, please contact Shirley Yauw at syauw@apalc.org or 213-977-7500, ext. 265.

SCCLA FELLOWSHIP

As a SCCLA Fellow, you will have the unique opportunity to work with the Asian Pacific American Legal Center (APALC), the nation's largest legal organization serving the Asian and Pacific Islander (API) communities. This experience will allow you to work directly with the community by being a part of APALC’s Legal Services Unit, which provides free legal services to low-income individuals. You will learn how to conduct legal intakes, assist with casework, and learn about the areas of domestic violence related family law and immigration law.

Requirements and Guidelines:

1. Fellows are expected to work 150 hours per semester. The work schedule is 2 full days a week, working at least 15 hours a week, for 10 weeks. A $2000.00 fellowship award will be issued once you have completed your required hours.

2. Four separate fellowships will be awarded per year, two in the fall semester, and two in the following spring semester. It is possible to be awarded two fellowships (one for the fall and one for the spring).

3. The Fellowship is a distinct and unique opportunity. It cannot be used to satisfy school credit or any other program or project unless explicitly permitted by SCCLA and APALC prior to being selected as a fellow.

4. Once applications have been reviewed, APALC will contact potential candidates for a phone interview. For finalists, an in-person interview may be required. Once the fellows are selected, they will be contacted by APALC.

5. Selected fellows will be recognized at the SCCLA banquet that same year as “selected fellows”, but will not be awarded the fellowship title or money until completion of the fellowship requirements (scholarship and fellowship recipients are selected a few weeks before the annual SCCLA banquet which is generally held in March). The official award and recognition for fellows will be given at the following year’s banquet. For fall fellows, this banquet will happen after their fellowship is complete. For spring fellows, the banquet will occur concurrently with their fellowship, but after they have started their hours.

6. In the event a selected fellow is unable to begin their fellowship, other applicants may be contacted for their availability.
