Civil Rights Advocacy
As a minority bar association, SCCLA is committed to advancing civil rights. We help sponsor the Asian Concerns Committee (ACC), a joint committee of the local Asian bars. The ACC explores civil rights and other issues between legal and community organizations, develops position papers and recommends amicus curiae participation in civil rights cases. In recent years, SCCLA has joined other Asian Pacific organizations in resisting initiatives and other efforts to erode immigrant and civil rights. Additionally, this past year, SCCLA supported the efforts of Japanese Latin American former internees who sought redress as a result of the U.S. government’s removal of over 2,000 men, women and children of Japanese descent from their homes in Latin America and the placement of those internees in concentration camps.
